The life changing experience of seeing ‘Hamilton’

It’s about a year ago since  I was introduced to the magical musical that is ‘Hamilton’. When I first heard of this phenomenon, I  was intrigued by it’s description – a hip-hop musical based on the life of Founding Father and Founder of the U.S. financial system  – it seemed odd to say the least!

I began watching clips online of some of the songs and became captivated by it’s clever rhymes and ability to turn a relatively unknown story into a gripping tale that resonated with everyone on some level.

Last summer, I was lucky enough to travel to Chicago and as soon as the flights were booked, checked online to see if we could grasp any of those nearly-impossible to get tickets . We managed to booked seats and the countdown was well and truly underway!

I spent the next few months listening to the soundtrack nearly obsessively and somehow got my family hooked too- we were interested to see how this intelligent score would be brought to life on stage.

When we finally made it to the theatre in Chicago, what we experienced was far better and enthralling than I ever could have imagined. The characters protrayed on  stage brought these 200 year old historical white men to life, embodied in a current and slick way that made everyone sit up in their seats and care about their lives and struggles.

Only when you see the live show do you realise how much  of a musical genius Lin Manuel Miranda is. He seamlessly weaves together hip-hop rhymes and beats with (mostly) historically accurate stories about the establishment of America.

If you ever get the chance to see this show (and I highly recommend it!) be prepared to shed a tear (or fifty!). There’s more than one heart-string-pulling scenes where themes of love and loss are examined in front of a really fascinating historical backdrop.

You’ll laugh, cry and have songs stuck in your head for months afterwards!

Seeing ‘Hamilton’ live was truly one of the best experiences I’ve had and it introduced me to a cultural world that exists in America that has rarely been showcased in this way before . It brought  white, old historical figures to the 21st century and protrayed them in a way that represents how America looks today – real modern-day masterpiece!
